Hi guys.
I can't draw to save my life. Just wanted advice on what're the best techniques for creating reconstructions? I'm currently stippling, but it's taking forever and isn't that easy to get the shading right! Is it easier to shade with a pencil or is there any good illustration software out there? I'd be very happy to hear what other people are doing!

Hey Dave, I use a combination of Illustrator and Photoshop. First I draw the reconstructing (no matter how badly) and scan it in, then I use it as the basis to redraw it in Illustrator. Have a tablet really helps for this, and is ciritical to the final stage - I port the outline from Illustrator to Photoshop, and shade in that. The trick is to use masks to isolate each part of the reconstruction so going over the edges doesn't matter, and to have the hardness and opacity of the brush set fairly low. Also, have the reconstruction be much larger than it needs to, then shrink it down after. I've attached the most recent results of this process. It's not perfect, but I think it gets the job done. Thanks James,
The 3D effect that this gives the legs is amazing. Perhaps you should be doing my reconstructions for me?! I'll try out this method later!

James the illustrations look great!
Perhaps you should make a youtube tutorial for teaching this technique.

You port from Illustrator to a Photoshop app on your tablet, as in an iPad?
